  1. Himeji Castle is perhaps the most beautiful
  2. castle in Japan today.  Its 78 separate buildings,
  3. the largest of which rises five storeys above the
  4. top of the hill, seem to float above the city of
  5. Himeji.  Potential invaders could only reach the
  6. castle by scrambling up narrow paths carved into
  7. the side of the hill.  Here, it was nearly
  8. impossible to hide from the arrows that rained
  9. down on them from  the walls above, making the
  10. castle unassailable.
